First off, what is a conservatorship? A conservatorship, also known as a guardianship in some places is when an individual is deemed unable to handle their financial and medical affairs and a court will step in and assigns someone to be the conservator and their role is to make decisions on behalf of the individual who is deemed incompetent. The conservator in turn has to report everything they do to the courts on an annual basis so the court can ensure that they are making decisions for the benefit of the conservatee.
Now, let’s focus on Britney. She has been in a conservatorship since 2008, however, her case has been gaining more headlines recently due to recent court visits and a documentary that was recently released on streaming platforms from the New York Times.
Currently, Britney is petitioning the court to appoint a 3rd party co-conservator for her estate. Someone who is not related to her and will remain neutral when it comes to decision-making. The court has appointed a co-conservator for the time being and at the next court date they will be determining if this continues on. The other big question will be does her dad remain on as a conservator? Regardless of personal opinions her father has followed all legal guidelines set out by the courts since 2008. There is a lot of information that goes into making decisions around conservatorships, from financial reports to medical records and the ultimate goal is to make a decision that will best suit the conservatee who in this case is Britney Spears.
