Hey there everybody, this is Bridget Mackay. I am in Petaluma, California. I’m an attorney and I work in the area of estate planning and elder law. And as the last season of Game of Thrones is progressing through our second episode. Someone brought my attention to this article. We’ve shared it on our Facebook page, it’s from wealthmanagement.com. It’s called the 18 Estate Planning Lessons From the Game of Thrones and I thought it was actually pretty good. I want to highlight a couple of those.
And today the first one I want to highlight is DIY wills are not the answer. If you remember in season one, the best example of that is, Robert Baratheon who after he’s gored by the boar, writes out his last will.
And guess what? It just didn’t work. In some ways it was maybe not official enough. People didn’t know enough about it. And we know from Arya and her interaction with the Faceless Man that “Valar Morghulis”, every man is going to die. It’s a fact we’ve all known.
If you are looking at making a plan, do not follow Robert Baratheon’s example because if we know anything from the Game of Thrones, best laid plans fail. And unfortunately, Robert Baratheon’s were not even a best laid plan.
If you’re looking to make a more tight and thorough estate plan get in touch with an estate planning professional.
