Pet Trusts in Petaluma, San Rafael and Novato, CA
Hi there, this is Bridget Mackay. I’m an attorney in Petaluma, California, and with me today is my Bernese Mountain Dog, Talia, she’s 18 months, and I work in the area of estate planning, wills, trusts.
I want to talk a little bit about planning for your pet in your trust. If you’re like me, you love your animal and you want to make sure that they’re taken care of if something were to happen to you unexpectedly, and some don’t people know that they can do it, and you can do it in several ways. One is you can leave some money in your trust to your trustee, to give to someone to care for your pet until the end of their lives, and that would cover things like vet bills, food, anything that you would wish, housing, even.
The second is, you can make it more formal and create what’s called a “pet trust” and put some funds in there for the benefit of your pet, name a trustee who will be handling that trust, and at your pet’s death, then anything left over in that trust would go to your other beneficiaries. Finally, even if you didn’t have the funds to put together for your pet, you could name someone in your trust to take custody of your pet in order to find a loving home for them, if you were to pass away.
If you have any interest in establishing a pet trust or including them in your existing trust, you should seek out a qualified estate planning attorney in your area and get that done to protect you and them.
